YOU Can Win PPEA Awards

If you're one of the many PPEA members who likes to show your Palomino, the new PPEA Awards Program is for you! Through the year 2000, each time you place in any horse competition with your PHBA or PHA registered Palomino you can earn points toward beautiful year-end awards! How? Simple! Just 1.) join PPEA and pay $5 club dues for the year, 2.) nominate your horse on the official nomination form, 3.) hit the show ring, and 4.) send in your placings to our Points Chairperson Dana Myers on an official PPEA Show Report Form along with a copy of your show program within 10 days of each show. All horse shows and horse competitions open to the general public count toward this program including Palomino shows, other breed shows (such as AQHA), Open Shows, Youth Shows, and others. Our PPEA-sponsored Palomino Shows and "Rainbow" Fun Show at Crooked Creek will count double PPEA points! Awards will be presented in nine categories for adults and ten categories for youth at our PPEA Banquet next winter. Please note that shows that were/are held prior to June 10 can be counted if your enrollment and show placing reports are postmarked by June 10. (Important for shows held June 10 or after you must be signed-up the day BEFORE the show for points to count!) Rules, nomination information, and the forms you need are in the center of this Newsletter. See you in the show ring!

PPEA Plans 1st Annual Horse Shows!

Mark your calendar now for September 30 and October 1... it's PPEA's big weekend of Palomino and open horse showing at Crooked Creek Horse Park in Ford City, PA. Plan to bring your Palominos to our PHBA Shows let's aim for 60 horses and a Class "A" Show! The Rainbow Open Show on Saturday evening will be open to all breeds and all colors and will be lots of fun, too. Don't forget these shows will count double points for PPEA's Year-End Awards! Complete class schedule & info are coming soon, so start making plans to be there!

Show Book Final Deadline Coming

The deadline for getting ads in to our 1st Annual PPEA Showbook has been extended to June 30, but that date is absolutely final and is coming up fast! Every member needs do their part to help PPEA get off and running and get at least $60 per person in ads... Sales from this special edition Show Book will "make or break" our club programs for this entire year and beyond!

Ad selling hints: Be sure to tell your customers that over 1000 copies of the book will be printed and distributed all over Pennsylvania and in surrounding states... Ads do not have to be about horses or horse-related businesses (though those are certainly welcome)... remember a quarter-page is only $15 and is perfect for business cards or "Best Wishes" from a friend or relative!

PPEA News & Notes

PPEA Seeking Logo

Any artists out there? Break out the art supplies, because PPEA needs your talents to help design a new logo for our newly activated club. The logo must somehow feature the outline of the state of Pennsylvania and a horse or horses which can be colored Palomino (and shaded with a screen fill when printing the logo in black & white to indicate Palomino coloring), along with the letters PPEA. There is a sample outline of Pennsylvania on the cover of this Newsletter.

Each person is requested to submit no more than three designs for consideration. We'll run the submitted logos in a future issue of the PPEA Palomino Post so that the membership can vote on the logo they like best. (If we get too many, we might have to form a committee to narrow the field to the top finalists.) The winning logo will appear in and on many PPEA publications and items for years to come! Send your submissions to the PPEA, 6093 Pleasant Valley Road, Irwin, PA 15642.

No Charter Yet

As of May 9, PPEA finally received "official" word from PHBA that our application to re-activate our charter in 2000 was denied. This did not come as a big surprise as several of our members had been hearing word to that effect in Internet Horse Chat Rooms and by word of mouth for nearly two months, since right after the PHBA Convention.

No reason was given for the denial of our application. In the letter to our President which informed us of the decision, PHBA General Manager Cindy Chilton stated, "Please be aware that an organization does not have to be an APA to hold approved PHBA horse shows except the multijudged show." At the April meeting the membership discussed that in this event, we should proceed as we planned anyway for 2000 by holding our scheduled single-judged horse shows and by continuing to promote the Palomino, especially in the many areas of our state where Palomino horses and activities have not been recently promoted.

We plan to re-apply to get our charter reactivated in 2001 and to have people at the Convention in San Antonio to present our application in person next time. Charter progress will be discussed at future meetings, so please attend!

Thoughts & Prayers

Our thoughts and prayers are with Cliff Laughlin as he lost his young Palomino broodmare to colic shortly after she foaled a beautiful palomino Appaloosa colt.

Get Well wishes to Cheryl Abbott who broke her collarbone in a horse driving accident; and to Merle Kuznik who cracked ribs after being knocked down by a frisky foal. Hope these ladies feel better soon!

Meeting Notes - April 9

The April meeting of PPEA was held on the 9th at Chris Mitterer's Keystone M Quarter Horses near Brookville. The club welcomed several new members at the meeting. Major actions passed included motions for our shows to be held September 30 & October 1 at Crooked Creek Horse Park; motion for PPEA to join the PA Equine Council; motion to support the PA State 4-H Horse Show Palomino Production classes with some form of awards. Discussions included the progress of our PHBA Charter, scheduling of halter classes at our show (geldings rather than mares to follow stallion classes); plans to support of the Keystone International Livestock Expo and the Challenge of the Breeds; plans to support the PA Equine Council Horse Expo with a Palomino booth, and other activities. Luncheon was served; and the group toured Chris' facility and visited his horses. (Full minutes to be presented at the June 14th meeting.)

THANK YOU, Chris for your kind hospitality!

The Cremello Dilemma

How would you feel if you bred your registered AQHA Quarter Horse to another registered AQHA Quarter Horse and ended up with a beautiful, solid colored baby that can't be AQHA registered because it's the "wrong" color? If you're a Palomino breeder, this COULD happen to you. 25% of the time when you breed Palomino to Palomino, you can get a "cremello" a horse which simply has two copies (one from each parent) of the wonderful creme gene which makes our Palominos golden. Cremellos are light ivory colored, with pink skin and beautiful blue eyes. And the fabulous thing about a cremello horse is that if you breed cremello to sorrel you get 100% PALOMINOS EVERY TIME!

Back in the 1940's, before the days of DNA study and modern genetic screening, Cremellos were wrongfully confused with albinos and were refused registration by AQHA. That outdated rule is still on the AQHA books, which is why your healthy, full-blooded Cremello Quarter Horse could someday be denied it's rightful AQHA papers and heritage!

A group of concerned breeders attended the 2000 AQHA Convention and is working to get AQHA to change this outdated rule, Rule227J.

Editor's Corner "FEED THE FOAL!"

A new or reactivating club is like a young horse... it needs lots of love, care, and work. If you have the most promising young foal who ever lived but you don't bother to feed it or give it proper care, it will never become a champion it might even die!

PPEA is like that young foal right now... with the proper "feed" and care our club has the potential to be strong and do great things to promote the Palomino Horse. On the other hand, if everyone says 'I'm too busy to help' and sits back to wait for someone else to do the work, PPEA will never amount to much, and could even fall apart. THE CHOICE IS YOURS!

Here are 6 easy ways to "feed the foal" & help PPEA:

1) Join & Pay Your Dues

2) Help Raise Money: Sell Ads for the Showbook, Get a Major Sponsor, Buy & Sell Shirts

3) Come to Every Meeting and Bring Your Ideas

4) Volunteer Really Work and Make Your Ideas Come True

5) Spread the Word About PPEA Get New Members

6) Bring EVERY Horse You Can to Our Show!

If we as Palomino lovers take the time now to do these things and give our PPEA "foal" a good start, our club will grow up to become that champion a great club promoting a great breed!

Many thanks to all the people who have called and e-mailed already to ask what they can do to help PPEA get off the ground! Keep on FEEDING THE FOAL! Ed.
