"Team Palomino 2001" is First Again in
Pennsylvania KILE "Challenge of the Breeds"

"Team Palomino" was named First Place Team for the second straight year in the 13th Annual "Challenge of the Breeds" at the Keystone International Livestock Exposition, held at the Farm Show Arena in Harrisburg PA on Saturday evening October 6. Competing for Team Palomino were Sunny K Jazz, 1983 gelding owned and shown by Mary Beth Kuznik of Irwin PA; Hobby Horse Top Jazz, 1986 Mare (and daughter of Sunny K Jazz) shown by 14 year-old youth member Michele Farabaugh of Alexandria PA and owned by Mary Beth & Paul Kuznik; and Pattis Cheero, 1996 mare owned by and shown Shelley Stawecki of Franklin PA. On their way to the team tournament victory, one or more Palominos placed in the ribbons in every one of the seven events making up the KILE Challenge of the Breeds. For their First Place efforts, team members received a beautiful framed trophy poster of the 2001 Keystone International Livestock Exposition program cover, as created by artist Marcus Stone.

In addition to the First Place Team award, Hobby Horse Top Jazz and Michelle Farabaugh placed 6th overall, and Sunny K Jazz and Mary Beth Kuznik placed 7th overall in the individual competition representing the Palomino. Pattis Cheerio and Shelley Stawecki won first place in the Barrel Race with a time of a little over 18 seconds, in what may be the KILE Challenge all-time record for that event.

Celebrating the truly versatile all-around horse, the KILE Challenge of the Breeds consists of horses from ten invited breeds competing in seven widely varied events held in one evening. The seven events include English Pleasure, Hunter Hack, Pleasure Driving, Western Pleasure, Western Riding, Timed Obstacle Trail, and Barrel Race. Each horse must participate in at least six of the seven classes. An overall individual Sovereign Champion and other overall individual winners are determined, as well as the Breed Team Tournament Awards.

The 2001 KILE Challenge of the Breeds was sponsored by Nutrena. Judges for the event were Joan Mitch of Germansville PA, and Brian Bradley of Leroy NY. Ringmaster was Jess Darlington of Centre Hall PA.

Jointly representing the Pennsylvania Palomino Exhibitors Association and the Keystone Palomino Exhibitors Association, "Team Palomino 2001" had decorated stalls and a display area featuring the Palomino Horse on the Farm Show Arena's Main Lower Concourse throughout the week. Palomino promotional materials were distributed to hundreds of visitors, along with PHBA registration and membership information. Assisting with the team, the display, or as team "pit crew" were the Farabaugh family of Alexandria, PA; Mary Mason of Williamsburg, PA; Merle Kuznik of Irwin PA, KPEA Past-President Jim Brewer of Denver PA and daughter Courtney; PPEA 2001 VIce President Vernon Mast and Pauline Mast of Lititz PA, Bob Sneed of Harrisburg PA, and Kelly Snyder of Walnutport PA.

Horses competing in the KILE Challenge of the Breeds are nominated by their respective Pennsylvania State breed associations, and must be owned by a Pennsylvania resident/bonafide member of the state association. Each of the ten invited breeds may nominate up to three horses. A Breed Team must have three horses and at least one of those horses must be completely ridden and driven by a qualified Youth member as per each breed association's rules.

The scheduled date for the 14th Annual KILE Challenge of the Breeds is Saturday Evening, October 5th, 2002 at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Arena in Harrisburg.
